Instagram vs. Pinterest

Of the many social networking platforms out there, Pinterest and Instagram are growing to be the favorite among long-time marketers on social media, and this shouldn’t be a surprise: as predominantly visual creatures, human beings are drawn to images more powerfully than to pure text, which means an opportunity for marketers to increase engagement and conversions.

If your business has or can potentially generate strong visual content, but has yet to try any of these platforms, you might want to consider. But before jumping on the bandwagon, what should you know about the two?

Pinterest: Content Curation

Pinterest primarily lets people make their own virtual scrapbook of things they are interested in, whether it’s fashion, comic book characters, architecture, inspirational quotes—you name it, as long as it is in visual format. It’s a place where users get to collect and curate the images they love under thematic “pinboards.”

Pinterest is a great option if you’re a retailer with awesome pictures of your products. If your images fall under some of its available categories, they can pop up when users browse those categories. That’s not all. Since it’s also a place where people look up information while shopping, you can add infographics you’ve made related to your products, services, or industry.

Instagram: Content Creation

Unlike Pinterest, Instagram is mainly about content creation. By using a mobile app, users can take photos or record short clips, add filter or caption for images, then instantly upload them online. With Instagram, people can take a very personal approach by capturing life’s moments in a picture or video.

What’s fun about Instagram is that you can use it to create original content about your brand, or even showcase behind-the-scenes shots and teasers about your company. What matters though is that the more human and personal your visuals are, the better. So if your company is the type to put a “human touch” to its products and services, this platform might work well for your visual marketing efforts.
